The Business-to-Business Operating System (B2B-OS) is an open source effort on building open, secure and efficient electronic marketplaces. B2B-OS provides a decentralized resource allocation mechanism (read: matching of supply and demand) based on negotiating software agents. A prototypical Java-based electronic marketplace has been built, where small businesses try to sell and buy goods by configuring a (mobile) agent and sending it to the electronic marketplace to autonomously negotiate. In contrast to closed market simulations, the real world application domains envisioned are open to new participants and allow different development paths. Agents in such environments operate in real time and are governed by different independent principals. Coordination in the marketplace is a means for making concessions, and every agent is guided by nothing but its own experiences and expectations.
